Aquaponics is the cultivation of vegetables using fish waste is a scientific farming discipline that has been around for thousands of years but has only recently become popular in South Africa.  Songa Mbele is committed to constructing commercial aquaponic units (big enough to feed all the children in the school) and training facilities in ALL 1100 of our rural schools by the end of next year, 2019.  We will use the aquaponic unit as an integrated-learning lab and provide comprehensive (end to end) training on how it works, why it works, the science behind it, how to operate one as well as the business aspects of commercial aquaponics. We will encourage the community to acquire an aquaponic unit to feed their family and their children can assist them through the process, as they would have learnt all about aquaponics at school.
